Oyster Restoration Near Plum Island Strengthens Ipswich Coast

The Massachusetts Oyster Project began its Ipswich restoration work in 2025 amid a global backdrop of roughly an 85% decline in oyster populations from overfishing, water pollution and habitat loss. Project staff identified a site off Plum Island with historical oyster presence and potential for reef recovery, and—working with the town—have planted nearly 300,000 oysters raised in upweller systems.

Massachusetts Oyster Project Executive Director Liv Woods said recent monitoring indicates the oysters are surviving and reproducing naturally, and she described a goal of building interconnected, self-sustaining reefs. Molly Courson said the PIE‑Rivers Partnership supports restoration across the Parker, Ipswich and Essex river watersheds and is pursuing marsh work, culvert fixes and invasive species removal. Organizers plan for the restoration to improve water quality and help protect shorelines; restored reefs also lessen storm surge impacts, curb erosion and boost marine life.
